What is Lymgym? Lymgym is an inflatable foot pillow which encourages you to exercise your lower legs whilst travelling in the seated position. Designed by a team comprising a vascular surgeon, an emergency physician and a fitness design consultant, it has been scientifically proven to increase blood flow in the veins by 8 times above resting levels. It can help reduce the risk of travel related thrombosis (air, train, coach, car)by encouraging foot and leg exercise to take place while in the seated position. Please read and follow instructions below for best use.
How to use Lymgym The feet should be placed in either of the positions shown in the diagrams.
The downward action of one foot hinging on the heel (picture 1)or toes (picture 2),will cause the Lymgym to passively elevate the opposite foot also hinging on the heel (picture 1)or toes (picture 2).
Improves bloodflow Alternate rocking of the feet activates the foot and calf muscle pumps thereby increasing the blood flow returning in the leg veins (similar to walking).

At rest Ultrasound scan of femoral vein (in coach position) showing peak velocity of 0.12m/sec (12cm/sec)

Using Lymgym Ultrasound scan of femoral vein (using Lymgym)showing peak velocity of 0.96m/sec (96cm/sec)
Comfortable to use We recommend that Lymgym be used for a few minutes every 20-30 minutes during your journey. It can be used more often as long as it remains comfortable.

What is venous thrombosis? Clotting of blood in the veins of the lower legs is known as ‘deep venous thrombosis ’(DVT). This can occur upto several days after prolonged travel in the seated position. In some people it can occur without any noticeable symptoms but in a proportion it may cause pain, swelling or aching.Rarely a blood clot in the legs can dislodge from the veins and travel via the circulation to the lungs when it is known as a pulmonary embolus. Pulmonary embolus on rare occasions can be fatal. Some people are at greater risk of venous thrombosis than others.
Which people are at risk? Everyone is at risk of travel related thrombosis if the duration of the travel is prolonged over 5 hours and there is immobility of the lower legs in the seated position. Some people are at greater risk than others (see below). They should consult a doctor for advice before a long journey to ensure all is being done to reduce their risk of travel related thrombosis.
People with Age over 40 years Obesity Varicose veins Previous history of blood clots Heart disease Cancer Recent major surgery or injury (particularly to the lower legs) Family history of blood clots

How can I reduce my risk of travel related thrombosis? There are a number of things that can be done to reduce a persons risk of travel related thrombosis (If high risk group consult your doctor). In general terms avoid alcohol and smoking, drink adequate fluids and wear loose comfortable clothing. The most important thing is to ensure leg exercise during travel. Lymgym can help because it encourages foot and leg exercise to take place whilst in the seated position.Exercise can be used together with other methods of reducing the risk of travel related thrombosis such as compression stockings, for added benefit.
